Pallets as Package Type on Shipping Instructions from the USA and Canada

Good afternoon,

On a global scale, customs authorities are increasing their adoption of electronic methods for submission of manifests. As part of this ongoing transition, countries including the United States and Canada are enforcing manifest compliance rules that include references to package types. As a result, U.S. Customs and Canada Border Services Agency do not allow PALLETS or PALLET as the manifested package type for shipments, and therefore, cannot be transmitted.

The piece count and package description must be provided to the carrier at the lowest visible quantity and type for transmission to customs authorities. For example, a container loaded with 200 cartons on 10 pallets should be submitted for manifesting as 200 cartons.

Effective September 1, 2016, Shipping Instructions received that site the package type as PALLETS or PALLET

will not be processed. A request will be sent to resend the shipping instructions with lowest visible package kind as the primary packaging and piece count (e.g. carton). Failing to meet the requirement could lead to a delay in cargo loading.

If you have any questions, please contact your local customer service or sales representative. We thank you for your business, and we’re glad to be serving your transportation needs.

Kind regards,
